RIO DAY FIVE - MAY 15

ANOTHER GLORIOUS DAY RIGHT ACROSS THE BOULEVARD FROM OUR CONDO

WE ARE SO ENJOYING WATCHING THESE GUYS SHARPENING THEIR FOOTBALL SKILL WHILST PLAYING FOOT VOLLEY BALL...RIGHT ACROSS FOR WHERE WE WAIT FOR THE BUS INTO RIO DE JANERIO

THE FAMOUS AND BEAUTIFUL BAKERY TEA HOUSE,  CONFEITARIA COLUMBO, ESTABLISHED BY TWO PORTUGUESE ENTREPRENEURS IN 1894.  THAT'S ME IN THE GREEN CAP....

SPECTACULAR MIRRORS REFLECT THE LAVISH INTERIOR...WE ATE LUNCH CONSISTING OF DIFFERENT MEAT, CHEESE, HEARTS OF PALM AND CHICKEN STUFFED PASTERIES AND CROQUETTES.  NOT QUITE AS GOOD AS DEMEL'S!  WE ARE GETTING PRETTY PROFICIENT WITH HAND GESTURES AND CHARADES!

TRYING TO FIND THE TRAM STATION TO TAKE US UP TO THE SANTA TERESA NEIGHBOURHOOD ABOVE RIO WE STUMBLED UPON THIS  MAGNIFICENT 10-SIDED CATEDRAL METROPOLITANA DE SAO SEBASTIAO

BUILT BETWEEN 1976-1984 BY EDGAR DE OLIVERIA DA FONSECA...HIS USE OF STAINED GLASS  AND CEMENT IS AWE INSPIRING

AH!  THAT IS WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR...THE ACCOS DE LAPA USED TO BE AN AQUADUCT BRINGING WATER DOWN TO TOWN - NOW IT CARRIES THE TRAM UP TO SANTA TERESA. WE  JUST WALKED A COUPLE OF EXTRA KILOMETERS TO FIND THE STATION!

SANTA TERESA WITH VIEWS OVER THE CITY AND GUANABARA BAY...THAT IS MY THUMB, WE DID NOT HANG OFF THE SIDE EXCEPT FOR THE PICTURE!

MOSIAC TILE STEPS LEADING FROM THE LAPA NEIGHBORHOOD TO THE SANTA TERESA NEIGHBORHOOD

THE TRAM WE RODE BACK DOWN ON

MONUMENTO NACIONAL AOS MORTOS DA II GUERRA MUNDIAL COMMEMORATES THE BRAZILIAN SOLDIERS KILLED, IN ITALY, DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.  WE OBSERVED A NAVAL GRADUATION CEREMONY TODAY.
